The President/CEO functions under the general supervision of the Special Olympics Michigan Board of Directors. Functionally supervised by CMU Vice President for Business and Finance (for CMU purposes). Exercises supervision of professional and administrative, office professional, supervisory technical, temporary, and student employees assigned to the area of Special Olympics Michigan. Exercises general supervision over volunteers.

Position Summary

Directs the statewide program to implement and achieve the mission of Special Olympics Michigan. Oversees the development and implementation of a multi-faceted sports and training program, which serves the best interest of the athletes. Responsible for directing the human resources, financial, and operational functions of the Special Olympics Michigan program, to include hiring, evaluation, and termination of all staff. Develops organizational goals and strategic plans in conjunction with the Board of Directors.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree with preferred emphasis in administration, education, physical education, recreation, or special education.
At least six years of experience of a qualifying nature in fund raising, public relations, and/or administration or other related field.
At least 5 years of leadership experience.
Demonstrated ability to lead change.
Strategic planning development and leadership (Strategic thinking)
Develop and cultivation of corporate networks.
Presence and credibility to talk to corporate leaders and politicians.
Demonstrated working knowledge of administrative and organizational skills.
Ability to travel evenings and weekends.
Demonstrated positive interpersonal skills.
Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
Demonstrated ability to project a positive image.
Ability to perform the essential functions and requirements of the job.

Preferred Qualifications

Master’s degree preferred.
Experience and working knowledge of Special Olympics or Nonprofits.
Working knowledge of fundraising campaigns and strategies, personnel administration, strategic planning, and working with Boards.
Demonstrated ability to recruit and organize activities using volunteer groups.
Experience networking with high level executives or officials.
Big picture thinker.

Duties & Responsibilities

Develops and administers overall statewide year-round program.
Establishes the program and administrative procedures for the Special Olympics Michigan program as approved and authorized by the Special Olympics Michigan Board of Directors.
Ensures all rules and policies relating to Special Olympics are being observed statewide.
Ensures effective management of volunteer staffs statewide in the area programs. Ensures that an area accreditation system is in place and that each area program has goals, budgets and an annual evaluation. Officially appoints all area directors.
Submits an annual program plan and budget in accordance with the strategic plan.
Receives and distributes revenue and renders financial statements.
Develops and implements internal control procedures.
Coordinates the activities of the Board of Directors.
Apprises the Board of Special Olympics Michigan operations, developing issues, and presents the Board with policy and planning issues.
Assumes responsibility for development, implementation and monitoring of annual and long-range plans.
Develops and implements effective management and accountability process to achieve adopted goals.
Serves as liaison between the Special Olympics Michigan Board of Directors, United States Leadership Council, Special Olympics North America and Special Olympics Inc.
Holds office of secretary to the Board of Directors.
Plans agenda for approval by the Board Executive Committee for Board meetings.
Works closely with the Board of Directors and key staff to ensure a safe, viable, financially secure program in Michigan.
Establishes the vision and strategy for fund development.
Provides oversight for fundraising, marketing and public relations.
Acts as the spokesperson for the organization.
Develops talent and succession plan for key staff.
Attracts, recruits, develops and retains talent/staff.
Performs other duties as designated by the Special Olympics Michigan Board of Directors.
