Position Summary

The Director/Marketing and Communications provides and implements a strategic and integrated marketing and communications plan for Central Michigan University’s College of Medicine, with campuses in Mount Pleasant and Saginaw, Michigan, its clinical enterprise – CMU Health and CMU Medical Education Partners (CMU Partners) graduate medical education programs.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in public relations, communications, journalism, writing or a related field.
Four years of relevant experience as a reporter, public relations executive, editor or similar position.
Demonstrated ability to write and edit for print and web; to work with writers, photographers, illustrators, and designers to produce high quality publications, periodicals, and web-based media; to work with state and national media; and to follow style guides and graphic standards manuals to achieve consistency in text and graphics for print and web.
Demonstrated problem-solving skills.
Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills. Working knowledge of computer applications.
Experience with Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop).
Ability to project a positive and professional image. Ability to perform the essential functions of the position.

Preferred Qualifications

Master’s degree.
Previous experience managing a website.
Prior experience in an academic, hospital, or clinical environment.
Experience working across multiple sites or locations.
Familiarity with college/university operations

Duties & Responsibilities

Develops, leads, implements, and manages a plan designed to provide consistent visual identity, organizational voice, and institutional messaging regarding all college communication matters.
Acts as the primary author of college project proposals and other strategic documents.
Develops, implements, and maintains a communications strategic plan to promote the mission of the college.
Through the development and implementation of an integrated marketing plan, builds and enhances the image of the college and therefore of the University and CMU Partners; increases, strengthens, and improves internal and external relationships with constituents and stakeholders; ensures high-quality students from across the nation apply for admission
In collaboration with other college team members create project proposals, philanthropic submissions, and other strategic documents.
Directs and fosters internal and external communications by the college, its leadership, and units through activities including, but not limited to, the development and dissemination of communications from administrators and preparation of remarks, speeches, and other documents for the Dean and senior leadership. Drafts, edits and manages communications including internal campus communications, press releases, news stories, publications and the college website. Responsible for speech writing, talking points, preparing special announcements, project proposals, fact sheets and other materials on behalf of the Dean and senior leadership.
In consultation with the Office of University Communication, the individual acts as chief communications officer and spokesperson on college and CMU Partners public relations matters and serves as liaison with communications peers at the University, affiliated hospitals, partner communities, and other organizational stakeholders.
Directs internal and external marketing and communications, including the website, mass correspondence and direct mail efforts, published materials, other resource materials and the management of the College’s social media presence.
Work closely with University Communications to identify and pursue media opportunities in regional, state, national and trade media event marketing to ensure a constant flow of news stories and other strategic communications
Oversees media relations. Coordinates with CMU, distributed campuses and other strategic partners. Fields inquiries from the media and coordinates appropriate interviews and/or responses and press conferences. Serves as the CMED spokesperson when appropriate.
Oversight of marketing, branding and promotion activities for CMU Health physicians and clinical practices.
Manage the effectiveness of marketing strategies.
Manage coordination with University and/or freelance graphic designers. Act as part of the design team for marketing pieces for events (save the date, invitations, e-marketing, online registration, etc.)
Function as graphic designer on various projects when appropriate.
Act as photographer in supplement to, or in lieu of, professional photography for miscellaneous events and activities.
Provides support for and works with College and University Advancement department
