Position Summary

The Database Developer/Programmer is responsible for designing, developing and testing database solutions and bi-directional ETL (extract, transform, and load) processes between various CMU systems; is part of a team supporting interfaces and processes for the movement of data between systems, as well as helping develop reports and dashboards for data presentation and is a primary resource for technical support and maintenance of data structures and interfaces. Also assists with research and development to enable continuing innovation within OIT’s infrastructure.

Required Qualifications

Database Developer/Programmer I

Associate’s degree, preferably in Computer Science or Information Systems, or equivalent work experience.
One year of experience related to database design and development, SQL programming, or ETL work.
Familiarity with MS SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS)
Excellent, effective verbal and written communication skills.
Good interpersonal skills that can foster, demonstrate, and promote excellence in a team environment.
Ability to communicate clearly and effectively and project a positive and professional attitude.
Ability to research and resolve complex technical issues.
Self-motivated and able to work both independently and as part of a team.
Ability to learn quickly, meet established deadlines, and demonstrate strong problem solving and critical thinking skills.
Ability to manage timelines and deliverables, to create and manage task lists, and to meet work and project schedules as determined by others.
Ability to perform the essential functions of the job.

Database Developer/Programmer II

All the qualifications of Database Developer Programmer I, plus:
Bachelor’s degree, preferably in Computer Science or Information Systems, or equivalent work experience.
Two additional years of experience related to the design and development of databases and data interfaces.
Ability to work with user offices and subject matter experts in creating solutions using core supported systems.
Ability to participate in cross-functional teams to solve complex business or systems issues.
Ability to recommend and implement changes in development, maintenance and overall system standards.

Preferred Qualifications

Prior work experience in the higher education environment.
Familiarity with reporting tools such as Microsoft’s PowerBI or Reporting Services
Familiarity with Customer Relationship Management (CRM) Systems
Ability to gather and analyze user needs and create specifications to meet user requirements.

Duties & Responsibilities

Database Developer/Programmer I

Designs, develops, and maintains complex database solutions for data delivery among various university systems.
Documents and tests data interface procedures.
Troubleshoots and resolves data interface issues.
Participates in determining testing approaches and test planning and assists in creating test procedures.
Works closely with OIT staff and vendors to provide seamless support of data systems on behalf of end users.
Ensures the complete backups of relevant data systems and assists in creating and maintaining technical documentation
Routinely monitors database jobs and interfaces and investigate discovered issues or events.
Maintains a positive, service oriented approach with all faculty, staff, and students.
Acts as a technical resource for projects that involve data interfaces.
Other duties as assigned.

Database Developer/Programmer II

All the duties of Database Developer/Programmer I, plus:
Establishes best practices and provides primary support of ETL processing among systems.
Interacts with a variety of internal and external users to gather requirements and develops technical designs and solutions.
Reconciles complicated data and processing problems.
Analyzes existing systems for optimization and processes improvement opportunities.
Assists in establishing system specifications and infrastructure.
Assists in establishing and testing disaster recovery policies and procedures.
